Patternator Results - 2010

Total Output of Sprayer Nozzles

The total output of each nozzle with the Berthoud Saphirex 10 discs was measured. A plastic one gallon jug was placed over each nozzle and securely fastened. With the PTO running at 440 RPM, the spray was collected for one minute at 70 PSI. The total output with TeeJet D1.5 hardened stainless discs was also determined. Knowing the total output of the sprayer with each set of discs will allow determination of the percentage of total spray captured by each patternator. Three replicates for each set of discs was run and the amount of water collected was measured in milliliters. The mean of three replicates for the Berthoud Saphirex 10 discs was 1921 milliliters. The mean of three replicates for the TeeJet D1.5 discs was 1771 milliliters.

Statistical analysis was performed on the data using the VasserStats website. A one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) for independent samples with a Tukey's HSD test was selected.

The new TeeJet discs had a significant difference between the top and bottom nozzles. Interestingly the new TeeJet discs were significantly different, while the old and heavily used Berthoud Saphirex discs showed no significant difference. This is the opposite of what might have been expected. The TeeJet D1.5 discs were purchased loose from a large retailer, but actually contained two different sizes with some discs not marked at all. The TeeJet discs that were used in testing were all measured to be the same with a digital caliper accurate to 0.0005 inches.
